In 1778, Tipu Sultan defeated the Marathas and captured Nargund. Tipu decided to keep its Brahmin ruler, Vyankatrao Bhave, as long as he recognizes Tipu Sultan's supremacy and paid an annual tribute.〔Sen, p. 42〕 The Brahmin ruler would later become non-compliant and sought help with the Maratha ruler, Nana.
